Mitsubishi Teases a New Electric SUV Concept

At the upcoming 46th Tokyo Motor Show, Mitsubishi plans to introduce an all-new electric SUV concept car. While the automaker is keeping many details of this new vehicle a secret at the moment, some key details have been released — and they give us plenty of reason to get thoroughly excited about what’s to come.

As of now, we know that Mitsubishi is planning on introducing an all-new small plug-in hybrid electric SUV concept car at this year’s Tokyo Motor Show. So far, we know that the SUV will have all-wheel drive and full electric driving capability.

Mitsubishi itself has been keeping pretty quiet about the new concept, saying that the new concept is “An electric SUV that delivers unparalleled driving pleasure and confidence over all terrain in light and wind.”

The automaker also asserts that the new electric SUV concept will offer exceptional off-road handling and will boast new safety technologies to offer unrivaled confidence no matter the conditions.

From the mysterious teaser image Mitsubishi has released, it seems the new concept will feature futuristic carbon fiber detailing and a sloping greenhouse. Regardless of all else, the teaser image leaves little doubt that the new concept will have a striking and sporty look.

The Smart, Safe 2020 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV

When designing and engineering a vehicle, nothing is more important than safety — and Mitsubishi keeps safety at the top of its priority list throughout the manufacturing process. As a testament to this philosophy, the 2020 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV recently earned a five-star National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Safety Rating.

The NHTSA evaluates the safety integrity of all new vehicles through the New Car Assessment Program. The 2020 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV passed the side crash ratings with five stars. The new plug-in hybrid SUV was awarded four stars for front crash and rollover ratings.

The excellence of the 2020 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV in the NHTSA safety tests is not surprising when you consider the abundance of safety features integrated throughout the vehicle. Lane Departure Warning monitors your position within your lane and alerts you if you begin to stray. Adaptive Cruise Control maintains a safe distance between your vehicle and the car in front of you, even braking with the flow of traffic.

Forward Collision Mitigation with Pedestrian Detection uses sensors to scan for potential front-side collisions and mitigate the situation by applying the brakes. The program doesn’t only account for vehicles — it can also pick up on the presence of pedestrians and will automatically engage the brakes when necessary.

Ever Wonder Where Mitsubishi Car Names Come From?

Some car names can seem completely random, but brands such as Mitsubishi carefully consider naming their models before introducing them to the world. Not only does Mitsubishi want to avoid unappealing names, but they also want the name of a model to match its design and driving dynamics. If you’ve ever wondered where Mitsubishi car names come from, you might be surprised to learn that there’s a lot of thinking that goes into it.

The Outlander, for example, wasn’t always referred to as such. According to The News Wheel, the “Airtrek” is the original name for this vehicle, as it was meant to imbue a sense of freedom and weightlessness. However, such a name doesn’t exactly capture the rugged adventurousness of the capable SUV, so Mitsubishi decided to call it the “Outlander” once it hit markets in the West. The term “outlander” often means to push the boundaries and to come from beyond the norm — a suitable name for a unique vehicle.

The Eclipse Cross also has a unique name, as many owners will recognize that the Eclipse as the name of a sports car offered by Mitsubishi through the early 2000s. Due to the popularity of the sports car, the brand sought to bring it back. However, this time it chose to introduce the Eclipse as a crossover — hence, the name Eclipse Cross.

The Mirage also has a striking name, though it’s been used since the 1970s. The term “mirage” comes from the Latin word “mirai,” which mean “to wonder” or “to look at.” In fact, the word “miracle” and “mirage” have the same root. Therefore, the moniker is particular well-suited for a subcompact model that offers incredible value and a sleek style.

Mitsubishi Takes Third Place in J.D. Power Survey

Every year, the J.D. Power Customer Satisfaction Survey asks customers if they are happy with the quality of their vehicles. As one of the largest surveys on long-term satisfaction, J.D. Power is a trusted organization whose results inform countless people when they go to buy their next car. The 2019 edition of this trustworthy survey revealed that Mitsubishi has earned the third-place spot in the results rankings.

The results of the survey indicate that Mitsubishi has succeeded at one of the company’s biggest goals — a complete reputation makeover. Years ago, Mitsubishi began rolling out a strategy to improve their products, starting with the Outlander, as well as introducing more SUVs and crossovers into the lineup. You can see the fruit of the brand’s labors in just one year — between the 2018 J.D. Power Customer Satisfaction Survey and 2019’s results, Mitsubishi leapt from 10th place to 3rd among mass-market auto brands only.

When the J.D. Power survey includes luxury brands, Mitsubishi jumped from 21st place to 12th place, making it the top Japanese brand among non-luxury automakers. Despite the jump, Mitsubishi isn’t content to rest on its laurels — the company plans to continue bettering its products and customer satisfaction rating.
