The modern Mitsubishi lineup is currently defined by SUVs, with vehicles like the Outlander and the recently-introduced Eclipse Cross. Long gone are the days of sporty Mitsubishi models like the Lancer.
However, recent reports from Autocar suggest that the Lancer could be on the way back in the form of a new Lancer Evolution model.
Supposedly, this new Lancer is the brainchild of Mitsubishi CEO Osamu Masuko. Masuko supposedly wants to reintroduce sporty models back to the Mitsubishi vehicle lineup, and the Lancer Evolution would be the first of these vehicles.
Those same reports suggest that the new Lancer Evolution will be based upon the drivetrain components of the Renault Megane RS. This information actually makes a lot of sense, as Mitsubishi and Renault are currently in an alliance of sorts.
The Lancer Evolution will reportedly bear a similar engine to that of the Renault Megane RS — the turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, certainly capable of producing the sporty performance expected from a model like the Lancer Evolution.
Of course, Mitsubishi hasn’t made any official announcements about this new Lancer Evolution, so, for the moment being, its existence remains a rumor. Nevertheless, if such a vehicle does exist, it will add a touch of nostalgia to the blossoming Mitsubishi lineup.
If High Point Mitsubishi hears any more about this new Lancer Evolution, we’ll be sure to update our blog with that information.
